Read Ted Novin's October 13 post that discusses misinformation about so-called "assault weapons" and then watch this very good video by a San Jose (Calif.) police officer who effectively explains the differences between fully automatic military rifles and semi-automatic military look-alike rifles and why there is confusion about them. View it on You Tube or below.

Any discussion on this topic should start out by explaining that "Assault Weapon" is not a piece of equipment... It is a political phrase. The equipment mis-labeled in the article is a semi automatic rifle. They are VERY seldom used as weapons, and the VERY large majority of owners have no intention of assaulting anyone.

He makes a invalid point 3-4 times with the Full Autos are only legal for .gov and LEO.
Pay the tax and a clean record and many states still "allow" full auto.

I think it all started with the Srurmgewehr which doesn't translate into Assault Rifle. But then, Armalite called thier protypes Ar's. And that was short for Armalite Rifle. Then as you say, politicians and media got hold of it and temrnd it Assault Rifle.
You're right though it is a good representation of sound logic.

Re: Sons of Liberty
You're correct, but in a video targeted towards people who are confused about what exactly an assault rifle is, trying to add in the confusion of the NFA, the Hughes Amendment, tax stamps etc would only end in him confusing the hell out of people.

Why don't "they" label every weapon that is used in a crime "assault"? Then we could have special regulations covering ASSAULT KNIVES, ASSAULT BASEBALL BATS, ASSAULT FRYING PANS, ASSAULT ROCKS, etc.
The news media, beside labeling a criminal who commits a crime with a gun a GUNMAN, would have to use the terminology; A KNIFEMAN, A BATMAN, A FRYING PAN MAN, A ROCKMAN, etc.
